Any situation where the axial reciprocation of the pipe string or the application of large tensile, compressive, or percussive forces may be beneficial will respond favorably to the use of pipe vibration. The vibration process is applied from surface, generally without any downhole intervention, and often provides immediate results. Pipe vibration is transmitted by the free portion of the pipe string to the stuck interval that may be thousands of feet below surface. The results are quick release of the pipe from the restraining media. Rig-up time is usually less than an hour and initial results are often achieved in minutes.
On one workover job, a string of 2-7/8" EUE tubing, tubing anchor, and sand stuck sucker rods inside were recovered simultaneously thus avoiding an outside backoff attempt with the real potential of leaving the rod string standing inside the well casing. In other typical jobs, wirewrap screens and packers are recovered from gravel pack completions, totally avoiding jarring and washover operations. On another job, recovering a 10,000 foot scale stuck rod string, a combination string of 7/8" and 3/4" sucker rods was recovered thus avoiding a tedious and often time consuming stripping job with associated risks as well as the potential for considerable rod damage.
